Sinds 1 januari moeten vissers van de EU een elektronisch logboek bijhouden van wat ze waar en wanneer vangen. Die gegevens kunnen ze elektronisch doorsturen naar (in Nederland) de AID en andere overheidsorganisaties waaraaan ze informatie moeten sturen. Het voordeel van de Vishub is nu dat ze met één bericht aan meerdere informatieverplichtingen kunnen voldoen. Vissers kunnen daarbij zelf bepalen welke gegevens ze aan wie verstrekken. Gebruik van de Vishub is niet verplicht; vissers kunnen ook besluiten via andere (digitale) kanalen informatie aan de betreffende instanties aan te leveren.
Verburg rekende voor dat de efficiënte aanpak van het berichtenverkeer de vissers veel werk bespaart en zo een stuiver per kilo vis scheelt, in totaal 4,1 miljoen euro per jaar. Voor de overheid zou de winst jaarlijks 1,1 miljoen euro zijn. Private partijen in de keten zouden er ook baat bij hebben; vissers kunnen bijvoorbeeld de visafslag al van tevoren inseinen welke vangsten er binnenkomen. En dat maakt het volgens Verburg makkelijker om de veiling, transport, verwerking en verkoop op elkaar af te stemmen.
